Life's a Beach...

Friday, January 22, 2010

This was one of my favorite shoots all season. I LOVE when my clients bring along props that help show who they are as a family. The Fogg family loves to surf! Dylan who's only 7 or 8 was not looking forward to this shoot, but once he got there, he was such a stud! He even kept coming up with cool ideas for pictures and had such a "cool dude" attitude. I loved it! :)

We need your help!

Last year, I did a photoshoot for this sweet little girl Gwendolyn,
and this handsome little fella Micah.

They both suffer from Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Most people have not even heard of SMA or realized it is the leading genetic killer of infants. It is a terminal, degenerative disease that results in the loss of nerves in the spinal cord and the weakness of the muscles connected with those nerves. SMA impacts the ability to walk, stand, sit, eat, breathe and even swallow. The mind and spirit are no different from that of a healthy baby, but the body eventually fails. Typical babies with SMA Type 1 have a life expectancy of between one and two years and they require around-the-clock medical assistance and monitoring.

Please take a moment to watch this touching video to learn
more about Gwendolyn & Micah and the Chase Contest:

Here's the scoop on how you can help...

JP Morgan Chase Bank has committed to donating $5 million dollars to non-profit organizations, $1 million of which was already distributed in December. Through a Facebook voting system, the top 100 non-profits were awarded $25,000 in cash. The Gwendolyn Strong Foundation was one of these winners (yippeee!), and 100% of the funds were sent directly to UC Irvine's SMA research team. Next up is the final round of voting for the BIG prize: $1,000,000. One million!! This voting is all done through Facebook, and ends this Friday 1/22/2010. Imagine this: $1,000,000 towards SMA research could actually end this disease. Not "get the ball rolling" on research, not "hope for a cure," but actually end it. And, most importantly, it could save Gwendolyn & Micah's life. The research that is sooooo close to FDA approval is one that could affect babies who already have SMA (like Gwendolyn & Micah), and could completely remove them from symptoms.

Info On SMA
  • SMA -- Spinal Muscular Atrophy -- KILLS more young children than ANY other inherited disease -- 50% die by their 1st birthday, 90% by their 2nd.
  • 1 in 40 people UNKNOWINGLY carries the SMA gene -- few have any known family history.
  • SMA is degenerative and terminal. Although born healthy, babies eventually lose the ability to walk, sit, eat, breathe, and even swallow. The mind is NEVER impacted and children with SMA are bright and social.
  • There is currently NO treatment and NO cure, but there is HOPE!
  • The National Institutes of Health (NIH) coined SMA as the disease "CLOSEST to TREATMENT".
  • Researchers say a CURE is possible in a few years -- IF given adequate funding.
  • SMA is considered a "model" disease and many scientist believe it is a "gateway" to answers for countless other diseases, including: ALS/Lou Gehrig's, spinal cord injury, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, the muscular dystrophies, and even some forms of cancer.

BEST logo designer EVER! - Leslie Lewis Sigler

Thursday, January 7, 2010

One thing I have learned about myself over the last few years is that I am a TOTAL control freak! I would rather struggle and do something myself, then have someone else do it for me in half the time. I finally realized that I have been "struggling" with designing my own new logo for the last 5 years. I just couldn't bring myself to hire someone to do something I felt I could do myself.

Would I be able to articulate to a designer the vision I had inside my head? Do I even know what I want for my logo? Can I trust them to do a good job? What if I don't like what they come up with and then I'm out a ton of money? These were some of the fears I had running through my head, which lead me to putting this process off for many years. That is... until I met Leslie Lewis Sigler!

Leslie takes my Body Boot Camp class that I teach down by the beach 3 times a week. I had gotten to know her over the last few months and felt I was emotionally ready to give up this part of my business to her. I was still very nervous the first time we met at Starbucks to go over what my vision was. I brought along a few samples of things I liked and what I was currently using for my marketing materials. She asked me a few questions and that was it! "Could it really be that simple?" I thought to myself. Shortly after, she sent me a few designs and it was then that I finally exhaled. I LOVED what she showed me for my new possible logo. We did a few tweaks to one of the designs and that was it! Why didn't I do this years ago!?

I was so excited about how great she was that it lead me to come up with more and more things I wanted her to design for me. All in all, she has now designed a new logo, letterhead, business cards and a fabulous gift certificate for my photography business. We still have one more project we're working on that I'm so excited for, but I couldn't wait any longer to share what she's done for me thus far!

In addition to identity design (www.leslie-lewis.com) she has a custom design invitation business called Lilly Louise (www.lilly-loiuse.com) featuring custom designed wedding invitations, baby announcements and any other event you can dream up...

If you are struggling with a what to get a family member or really good friend for their Birthday, Baby Shower, or any other Holiday - why not get them something they can cherish forever! You will be a hit when you hand over this gorgeous gift certificate for a Free photoshoot for them!

***contact me at: info@kaciejean.com for details on how to give one of
these gorgeous certificates as a gift***

She also needed a few new headshots for her website and a cute photo for her holiday card, so I have to share those too. Isn't she just stunning!?

I think we're all a little jealous of her fabulous hair!

She asked that we do a totally candid shot of her and her husband with their dog for their holiday card. We couldn't have asked for more perfect weather!

Family Portraits - Elings Park

I feel like I have begun each post this new year with glowing reviews from a new favorite location. Well... here I go again... I LOVE Elings Park. I love all of the Oak trees and the fabulous lighting! Here is the Stewart Family. Little Eva is such a cutie and totally reminds me of my little Camille. I even let her borrow Camille's red tu-tu (which I still haven't even photographed her in yet!)

I LOVE this shot!
